About Helen from H's Handcrafts

Despite only recently delving into the crafty world I am well and truly immersed! I love to craft, crochet knit and sew and try to wear my handmade creations as often as possible.

I am now at the stage where I love pretty much every thing I make and so tend to stick to styles I know I love. But there is definitely something to be said for trying something new every once in a while. I never thought I would like wearing big flowy dresses but after trying one on a whim last year they are now one of my favourite things to make and wear. When I first set about to make the Clara wrap top this was the outfit I had in mind. A cropped wrap top over wide leg trousers… Only without the vest top underneath. But as you can see from this picture that would be highly inappropriate as the wrap is very low cut… so vest top it is! I’m still not super happy with the fit of this top but it does the job, I got this idea out of my brain and into realty and I love this outfit! Pattern. Clara wrap top by @greenstylecreations Fabric. I’m cutting out my Ogden cami sundress and using a little tip that I learnt from @cashmerette. Before cutting out your pattern pieces mark the cut lines on your fabric and stay stitch just inside them. That way the bias cut neckline has no chance to stretch out before stay stitching. Such a genius little tip! #SewistsOfInstagram #MillennialSewing #Sewcialists #SewMuchFun #TheSlowSew #SlowSewing #SewDisabled #ChronicallySewn #DisabledMakers #ChronicFatigue #ChronicFatigueSyndrome #SewingGuts #SewingDetails #TrueBias #OgdenCami [Image description. Sometimes a change is as good as a break. I’ve been knitting a lot with fingering weight yarn recently and my hands and eyes needed a break. So I took a quick dive into my yarn stash and had a rummage around to find something a bit different to work on. I have a whole bag of worsted weight cascade 220 yarn in lots of different colours each with less than 100g. These 4 colours just decided they needed to be paired together so I went on a pattern hunt for something worsted weight that used a small amount of 4 colours. As soon as I saw the colour quadrant crop by @jamesnwatts appear on my screen I remembered how much I loved that pattern when it was first released but was too ill to cast on. So I decided to go for it. This is my first real attempt at intarsia and I’m excited for it. #KnittingInspiration #KnitAndBeHappy #KnittersOfInstagram #Knitstagram #ColorQuadrantCrop #JamesNWatts [Image description. It’s Garment reveal day and I’ve finished my Ogden cami. I’ve made a couple of these before but never been happy with how the spaghetti straps look with a bra so I made a few small tweaks… I widened the strap and repositioned then to sit directly over my bra. – > swipe to see the pattern adjustments This version now seems to ride up a bit over my bust which I think is to do with there not quite being enough bust room so I will try sizing up next time but keeping all of my adjustments. I’m still not 100% convinced by the print but definitly think I prefer the style. #SewNewInJune @sowhatifisew #SewistsOfInstagram #MillennialSewing #Sewcialists #SewMuchFun #TheSlowSew #SlowSewing #SewYourselfSustainable #SustainableSewing #MySustainableLife #ReduceReuseRecycle #MakeDoAndMend #SewDisabled #ChronicallySewn #DisabledMakers #SewingDetails #MeMade #MeMadeWardrobe #MeMadeEveryDay #IMakeMyClothes #MeMadeOOTD #DIYOOTD #b36w29h39 #measurementsmovement #SewBusty #PatternHack #YouCanHackIt #TrueBias #OgdenCami #OgdenHack [Image description. I finished my Jet Set natural bra! It’s so much better than I could have imagined and a lovely way to use up woven scraps. The shape of the pattern and the gingham fabric are definitely giving me vintage vibes. Not sure I’m quite ready to post a modeled picture of me wearing just my bra on the Internet though ๐Ÿ™ˆ I did go a little off piste with the straps and back closure though. The pattern calls for a French back and lindsie also showed another option in the @sewbusty sew along but I realised right at the critical time that I didn’t have any G rings and didn’t really want to wait for some on order so decided to hack it and add a hook and eye closure. As the wings are made from woven fabric I needed to add some elastic into the back and so used 2 strips of my strap elastic. Anyway, I’m counting this mini pattern hack as my new fastening for #SewNewInJune @sowhatifisew For the straps I decided on a clean finish option and added them at the same time as I attached the main to the lining. For those of us who wear large cup sizes a spaghetti strap just isn’t an option. I had been meaning to try adjusting the ogden cami for wearing with wide strapped Bras for a while but never got around to it. Here I have tried widening the straps to 0.75 inches. I also moved the position of the straps to sit a little wider on the front and narrower on the back to nicely sit over a bra strap. These adjustments have made a massive difference and I’m much more likely to wear this pattern now but something is still not sitting quite right. I’ll have a bit more of a play around with the adjustments and see how it goes. I’m definitely counting this towards today’s prompt for #SewNewInJune because whilst I’ve 5 made a lot of the common major adjustments that I always need I am very new to this idea of minor tweaks to make something just perfect… Not necessarily always about fit, sometimes adjustments can be done to reflect style choices. @sowhatifisew #SewistsOfInstagram #MillennialSewing #Sewcialists #SewMuchFun #TheSlowSew #SlowSewing #SewDisabled #ChronicallySewn #DisabledMakers #SewingDetails #MeMade #MeMadeWardrobe #MeMadeEveryDay #IMakeMyClothes #MeMadeOOTD #DIYOOTD #PatternHack #YouCanHackIt #TrueBias #OgdenCami [Image description. I’ve managed to sew a couple of successful crop top style bralettes before but never anything with any more structure than that. (I did attempt the Lana bra once but the fit was so far off I didn’t go back to it). So when I saw that this months @sewbusty sew along was a wireless bra I decided to give it a try. I’m still playing catch up and currently have the main pinned to the lining ready to bag out. I’m secretly pretty confident that this one will be a better fit than I’ve managed before as the body measurements taken to choose your size seemed a bit more sensible than just measuring your upper bust and full bust which is what I’ve seen before. Instead this pattern has you measure your cup depth and horizontal measure across the cup. So that’s my new pattern for day 3 of #SewNewInJune organised by @sowhatifisew. This print is definitely a new fabric choice for me. I think I like it but it is so far from my usual wardrobe that I’ve been a bit scared to use it so I decided to make the smallest garment possible, an ogden cami, to try just a little bit of it and see how I get on, pairing it with plains in the rest of my outfit. Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹ I’m Helen. I thought it was about time for a reintroduction and it’s perfect timing to coincide with the #SewNewInJune challenge by @sowhatifisew . I love to sew my own handmade wardrobe in a slow, thoughtful and sustainable way. That includes caring for and mending garments. I was recently diagnosed with CFS which means I have no energy to join in with any making throughout the week – but for the past few months I have been trying to batch so my projects to make the most of the times when I have the energy to sew So with that in mind I will be sharing some of the things I’ve been working on as there have been lots of new to me components . #SewNewInJune @sowhatifisew #SewNewInJuneDay1 #SewistsOfInstagram #MillennialSewing #Sewcialists #SewMuchFun #TheSlowSew #SlowSewing #SewYourselfSustainable #SustainableSewing #MySustainableLife #ReduceReuseRecycle #MakeDoAndMend #SewDisabled #ChronicallySewn #DisabledMakers #ChronicFatigue #ChronicFatigueSyndrome #MeMade #MeMadeWardrobe #MeMadeEveryDay #IMakeMyClothes #MeMadeOOTD #DIYOOTD [Image description.
